It's more a teaching experience where you learn how to do the transports, navigate to hospital, do the paperwork. As an IFT EMT this process is not really a test. maybe 1 day of skills/sims and 1 day of EVOC (Ambulance Driving Test), but on the upside you do get paid during it! After that you are assigned an FTO where you will be the third member on a unit for about 10 shifts. Orientation is looooooong week, mostly powerpoints on what not to do and how to get fired. When I first started you would go through your PAT and drug test, the VSTs would take your uniform measurements that day and order them, you might not have them by orientation. Hey, I'll preface that I was in your exact position a couple years ago and I'm now a paramedic that can hopefully shed some insight. PS be nice to the VSTs and we'll give you the transits ) You also should get a stipend for purchasing boots. You'll get to know your hospitals really well, and get some patient care experience if you plan to move to 911 which they call EMT Bridge. Otherwise, IFT units will run anywhere from 2-8 calls a shift, with the occasional level 4 911 so don't get complacent on your skills. You have a chance to get on a CCT unit as well, in which case you'll be mostly driving and helping the nurse.

You'll be checking in/out equipment with the VSTs.(radio, med box, aed). Your uniforms will take about a month or so to get here so when you get your loaners take good care of them. At some point you'll also do EVOC(hopefully within your first month or so) and then you'll be able to drive! I'm pretty sure IFT units are posted when not on calls, often waiting in hospitals and what not. Then you'll begin field training under an FTO, which you'll have to clear within a week or two(Brush up assessments, vitals, and documentation/getting a history).

Hey, SoCal AMR VST here, if you're in the area that I think you are, you'll do two weeks of orientation (HR, logistics) and review some skills/equipment.
